Join us for an evening of musical delights taking place in the beautiful acoustic setting of Perth's St John's Kirk on April 29th at 7.30pm. Entitled ‘Chansons des Roses’ our Spring concert, led by music director Areti Lymperopoulou with piano accompaniment by Gordon Murch, contains an entertaining and varied programme that will take you from a traditional song from the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, "The Piper O'Dundee" , to performances of a number of modern composers’ refreshing choral works including Eric Whitacre’s ‘Sleep’, featured in Whitacre's "virtual choir" project in 2010, 'The Ground' based on a chorale from the last movement of Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass, and Morten Lauridsen's song-cycle 'Chansons des Roses' from which the concert draws its name.
Morten Lauridsen is America's most frequently performed modern composer and his ‘Chansons des Roses’ is a delightful setting of five poems describing roses, written by the Austrian poet Rainer Rilke. ‘Chansons des Roses’ has been described as a unified study in elegance, with the delicate tunefulness of the final movement ‘Dirait-on’ helping to make it one of the best-selling choral octavos of the late twentieth century. Amongst contributions by Holst, Elgar, Vaughan Williams, Britten and Ravenscroft, is included Richard Genée's ingenious and hilariously witty literal setting of Italian musical terms set in the style of an operatic chorus. Scottish composer Ken Johnston's choral setting of the traditional folk song ‘The Piper O'Dundee’ will end what promises to be a programme filled with new and familiar musical delights with which to celebrate the arrival of Spring. |
