Join us for a performance of Fauré's Requiem, Vaughan Williams Te Deum and pieces by Csemiczky, Palestrina, Verdi, Hogan and Poulenc.
Chansons will be led by choral director Areti Lymperopoulou, with Howard Duthie on organ and joined by baritone Phil Gault and soprano Amy Spearing. The concert takes place in the wonderful setting of St John's Kirk, Perth. The centre piece of Chansons' concert is a performance of Fauré’s much loved Requiem in D minor Op. 48. In seven movements, the work is scored for soprano and baritone soloists, mixed choir and will be performed with organ. Fauré wrote of the work, "Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest." It was first performed at the Madeleine in Paris on 16 January 1888 at the funeral of a member of the congregation. This performance lacked the Offertoire, which was not composed until 1889 and first included in a performance on 21 January 1893, along with a setting of Libera me which had been written as an independent piece in 1877. Both new movements included sections for a baritone solo to site alongside the original five movements for choir and the much loved soprano solo, Pie Jesu. Fauré's Requiem remains a work of timeless elegance and hope, and we invite you to join Chanson, Perth's Chamber Choir, in the beautiful acoustic setting of Perth's St John's Kirk to experience for yourself, one of the best loved and most popular choral works of the 20th century. |
