Bach Jesu Meine Freude
Mozart Missa Brevis in D major

Join us in the magnificent setting of St John's Kirk in the heart of Perth for an evening concert featuring JS Bach's Jesu Meine Freude and WA Mozart's Missa Brevis in D Major. Joining Chansons will be instrumentalists, string players from the City of Perth Sinfonia, and professional soloists for a celebration of choral music old and new.

The concert opens with James MacMillan's Sedebit Dominus Rex, Bruckner's Os Justi and Ave Maria, before closing the first half with Jesu Meine Freude (Jesus, my joy) BMV 227. With its 11 movements, Jesu Meine Freude is the longest and most complex of Bach's motets. The central movement is a five-part fugue. It was unusual for Bach to write for 5 voice parts, but here he demonstrates his absolute mastery of the fugue, with a wonderfully exciting choral sound.

There will be an interval of approximately 20 minutes before the second half opens with Schubert's Psalm 23 for upper voices, followed by Bruckner's ever popular motet, Locus Iste. Faure's Tu es Petrus then precedes Mozart's Missa brevis in D major, K. 194/186h which ends the concert.

The Missa Brevis was composed for ordinary liturgical use in Salzburg Cathedral, at the request of Archbishop Colloredo. Composed by Mozart and completed on 8 August 1774, it is a short mass in six movements. Originally scored for SATB soloists, SATB choir, violin I and II, 3 trombones colla parte, and basso continuo, this was the first of Mozart's works to appear in print, published posthumously by the Lotter house in 1793. We will be performing it with organ, cello and violins.
